Costa Almeria

The Costa Almeria is a quiet, almost undiscovered area of the Spanish coastline, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.   The area has only recently come to the attention of British visitors, and the prices of property for sale are cheaper than in most other areas of Spain.  For instance, a four bedroom townhouse in Berja might cost £132,500, while a two bedroom townhouse in Alfoquia, a small town surrounded by orange and lemon groves, could cost as little as £90,000.  A seven bedroom villa in Roquetas de Mar could be purchased for a price as low as £52,000.  Buying off plan may also be a feasible option, offering exciting new opportunities in those areas of the Costa Almeria which are only just opening up to expansion.  Those buying real estate in order to rent to holidaymakers will find an audience in those looking for peace and relaxation, while those buying property for their retirement may be attracted to the area for the same reason.

Property for sale in the large tourist city of Mojacar is a little more expensive, with a one bedroom apartment costing as much as £112,000.  However, although the striking town of Mojacar has been popular with artists and holidaymakers for decades, other areas have been left untouched, mostly due to a road network which has now been vastly improved.  This has resulted in a number of peaceful, relaxed, untouched Spanish fishing villages, which, in other areas of Spain, may well have become large tourist centres.

Like many of the Spanish Costa's, the Costa Almeria, enjoys a micro climate, and receives over 3000 hours of sun each year.  The temperature remains averagely warm throughout the year, scarcely dropping below 13C in winter or rising above 25C in summer.  Certain inland areas are a lunar landscape of desert, a background that has appealed to filmmakers for years.   This particular scenery appears in such films as Lawrence of Arabia, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, along with many other popular westerns.

The Costa Almeria is served by Almeria airport, or, for those heading to the more northern areas, San Javier airport in Murcia or Alicante airport.  Almeria airport is located around ten miles from Almeria city centre, and buses regularly depart for the city centre, for a fare of €0.90, which is approximately £0.60.  Taxis are also available, for an average fare of €15, or just over £10.  From there, you can use Spain's excellent rail network or rent a car in order to reach the property you wish to view.
